As an employee of a Lutheran Church and School, the focus of our work together is the proclamation of the Gospel.
This employee will be in charge of the organization and presentation of the music for the Traditional Services at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
This person will have knowledge and experience in liturgical / Lutheran church music and plan the music for the Services cooperatively with and under the direction of the Pastor.
The employee will schedule the paid organists, plan the music and conduct the choir(s), the handbell choir, soloists, and any additional groups as may be needed, including instrumental ensembles, for special Services. Interpersonal skills are essential to recruit volunteers for the various musical groups that are presenting music for those Services. Skills in arranging music and playing the organ are desired, but not essential.
This person's duties will include:
Presence at the Traditional Services on Sunday morning, presently scheduled for 0830 and 1100, Wednesday noon Services, Wednesday Advent and Lenten Service (presently scheduled at 7pm), and other special Services (such as, but not limited to, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Thanksgiving).
Choir and handbell group rehearsals (pre-COVID were scheduled for Wednesday evenings).
Schedule the paid organists.
Arranging for special musical events that may also be desired which may require the hiring of additional local musicians and / groups.
Short range, we are presently taping a Sunday Service on Tuesday evenings, requiring the Director's presence for about 2.5 hours – we expect we will shift to live streaming this summer.
Preparation and submission of a budget for the music program to the Board of Directors, submit monthly expense accounts for the music program to the Parish Administrator.
Monitor the condition of the pianos, keyboards, and organ and ensure their proper maintenance.
Co-ordinate and facilitate music programs with Emmanuel Lutheran School in the Services.
Ability to play the organ would be an asset, but not required.
Familiarity with music computer programs for arranging and transposing music would be an asset, but not required.
This person will be a non-voting member of the Worship Committee
It is expected that these tasks will normally take about 15 hours a week.
