Greeter Training

Key Notes for Greeters:

• Arrive 20 minutes before your assigned service

• For the services in the sanctuary, take position at the entrance of the Narthex double doors and the lower level entrance. For Praise & Worship, stand at the entrance to the gym. Praise & Worship greeters also hand out bulletins.

• Remind worshippers to wear a name badge.

• Weather permitting, one greeter should stand outside the door welcoming by opening the door.

• Watch for attendees parking in the visitors spots and ask if you can assist with directions (Nursery, Restrooms, Gymnasium) and would the guest consider wearing a visitor badge.

• Consider the following scripts for welcoming:

Non-visitor: "Welcome, it's good to see you this morning. Be sure to pick up your name badge." Add any personal comments.

Visitor: "Good morning, my name is ____. Welcome to Emmanuel Lutheran Church. We're glad you have decided to join us today! Please be sure to register your visit during the service. We would like you to wear a visitor badge this morning if that's OK and I'll be here to assist you after the service if you have any questions." If it's 11 a.m., be sure to direct people to the traditional or praise & worship service so they know we have two styles running at the same time.

Usher Training

Key Notes for Ushers:

• Arrive 20 minutes before each service to distribute bulletins at each entrance to the sanctuary.

 • Greet and introduce yourself to everyone who comes in.

 • Team leader will review the bulletin to make sure lector and communion servers are attending. If not, determine who will take those places. If there is a baptism or other special event, make sure enough seating is reserved if needed in the front.

 • Help people find a seat if coming in late or in case of a full house.

• Collect the offering (two ushers in 8:30 a.m. service or four ushers in 11 a.m. service).

• Count attendance at each service and log in attendance book in church office. Be sure to count the nursery and Praise & Worship service in the gymnasium (11 a.m. only)

• For Holy Communion - three ushers are needed. Two to count 8-9 people for each side and one center "point person" to handle traffic at the front of the center aisle.

• If someone is in need of taking communion from the back of the sanctuary, tell the pastor how many in the back that may need the pastor to bring communion to them.

 • After each service, pick up stray bulletins and hymnals in the seats to reset for the next service. Pull off the attendace sheets from the black book in each pew. After the 11 a.m. service, turn off all lights and make sure doors are locked before leaving.

*Please review the video at the bottom of the page for a full communion rotation example.

Lector Example

Key Notes for Lectors:

• Practice reading before you read in church in case there are difficult names or words.

• Example of what to say before and after the reading: "The Epistle reading is from Col. Chapter Three, beginning at the third verse. This can be found on page 1834 in your red pew Bible if you would like to follow along." AT the end of the reading end with "This is the Word of the Lord." The congregation will respond with "Thanks be to God."

• If you are unable to read on your designated day, please call the church office a few days in advance so a substitute can be found.
