Emmanuel Lutheran Church Asheville

Family Ministries

Family Ministries at Emmanuel has a three-fold purpose: Providing fellowship opportunities, care and support in time of need, and service to our community.

SENIOR'S LUNCH

Every third Wednesday of the month after the Noon service in the narthex.

CONNECTING EVENTS

Family Ministries co-ordinates annual events that bring together our church and school families, in worship, food and fun activities for all ages. Examples of such events are tubing on the French Broad River, picnics, pool parties, and special meals and receptions! Contact Shirley Parker to volunteer.

SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS

Family Ministries realizes that an extension of our congregation is our student body of Emmanuel Lutheran. With that in mind, Family Ministries reaches out to students at registration, Advent and Lent by the distribution of age appropriate material such as Advent Calenders, pencils, and other materials. Contact the school office to help.

BUSHWACKERS

The Bushwhackers tend to the Emmanuel grounds to keep them tidy and attractive.  If you would like to lend a hand to support Emmanuel, that does not involve a meeting and get's you into "the outdoors," please call the church office.

PICKLEBALL

6 pm - 7:30 pm every Friday in the gym. Equipment provided. Contact Joel Helms for more info.

We are hopeful that this brief overview has increased your awareness of the Family Ministry Service. We would both welcome and appreciate your participation in our Ministry area!

First Communion and Confirmation

First Communion

Holy Communion, along with Baptism, is one of the two sacraments in Lutheranism. A Lutheran's First Communion is often preceded by a form of catechesis, which is education on religious doctrine.First Communion is typically done on Maundy Thursday in your child's 5th grade year. This is also the time when they can become acolytes which is a way to serve on Sunday mornings.

When a Lutheran child receives Holy Communion for the first time, that child is supposed to understand what the sacrament means. The most basic teaching of the Lutheran Church — and the easiest and quickest to learn — is Luther's Small Catechism in the Book of Concord. The Small Catechism is taught to children before a First Communion.

Questions?

Acolytes

The word acolyte means a "companion" or "one who helps." In accepting this position you will be serving as a companion or helper to your pastor: performing a number of important functions before, during, and at the close of the worship service. Acolytes are trained in the fall of their 5th grade year.

Questions?

Confirmation

Confirmation is a milestone year in your child’s walk with Jesus and their life of faith. They will experience unforgettable retreats, engaging biblical teaching, and so much more. Your child will grow in understanding about what they believe, they will make friends that will last a lifetime, and they will continue to build upon the faith foundation that you as parents have already begun. This program is open to students entering grades 6-8 in the fall of 2019. Youth are confirmed in the fall of their 9th grade year.

During Year 2007-08, the group completed "Jesus, the One and Only", an in-depth, interactive study including video lectures taped on location in Jerusalem and the places where Jesus walked in Israel, plus a six-week study on RUTH entitled "Reversing Life's Greatest Losses".

Started in 2004 with seven women, the group has served approx. 70 women to date. In 2005, the group sponsored its first Spring Women's Conference, Daughters of the King, with an attendance of 95 women! Three more well-attended conferences followed in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Watch for an announcement of a new study beginning in September, 2008.
